Water will no longer be your enemy, pedal with caution and never stop.
Every year, the rainy season dictates the rhythm of the city. The streets fill with cars, the pavement becomes damp, and movement slows and becomes cautious. But that doesn’t mean leaving your ECOBICI at the station; it’s about adjusting how you use it and learning to navigate the city differently. These tips will help if you’re still nervous about traveling during this time.

1. Prepare before you leave
Check the weather and have a lightweight, packable rain jacket handy. They usually take up little space and will make your ride more comfortable. Protect your phone and documents in a waterproof bag or case. Keep in mind that in Mexico City, downpours tend to be concentrated in the afternoon, so if your schedule allows, leave earlier to avoid getting splashed.
2. Check your bike more carefully
Wet pavement demands brakes and tires in good condition. Before setting off, check that everything is working properly: pedal a couple of times, gently test the brakes, and make sure the seat is secure. If something doesn’t feel right, take another bike; the system is designed precisely so you can easily make that change.

3. Adjust your riding technique
Brake smoothly and avoid sudden movements, both when braking and accelerating. Maintain a steady cadence, take corners more slowly and with less lean than usual, as traction is lost more quickly on wet surfaces. If you feel the rear wheel slipping, it’s best to stop pedaling and let the bike slow down on its own, rather than braking abruptly. A firm but relaxed grip on the handlebars also gives you more room to react.
4. Identify hazardous areas
Strainers, speed bumps, and crosswalk lines become especially slippery in the rain. Cross these surfaces as straight as possible and avoid braking or turning over them. Puddles deserve the same caution, as you never know how deep they really are, so a slight detour is always better than a nasty surprise.

5. Make yourself visible
With darker skies and less natural light, try wearing bright clothing or clothing with reflective details, and make sure your ECOBICI’s front and rear lights are working properly before you set off. This will not only help you see the road better, but also make it easier for other vehicles to spot you.
Adapting to the rain is a matter of practice. With each trip, you’ll learn which routes to avoid, which adjustments work best for you, and what times of day are best to ride. This way, the rainy season will cease to be an obstacle and will become just another opportunity to continue discovering the city on two wheels.
